Better red than dead
26 April 2005Something struck me whilst laying awake last night; what would happen if some major UK political figure snuffed it during the campaign? Would the media make fawning obituaries etc. or would they be constrained by the rules on election campaigning? I’m specifically thinking of Maggie here; if she popped her clogs there could be a swell of Tory support in sympathy. Though I suppose there would also be a swell of Labour support as her opponents remember the bad old days. So it would just be the Lib Dems who would get screwed over then. Plus ça change…

Perhaps you’re safe – she has promised to “go on and on” (and quite possibly “and on” again).
Maggie is subject to doctors’ orders, isn’t she (and quite possibly a couple of ASBOs). What if she actually died on polling day – I wonder if the broadcasters have considered whether they should report it?
