Though I'm aware of the basic plot, I missed Threads when it got repeated on BBC4 a couple of years ago, I might plump for the DVD of it though, if I wasn't so scared of having ongoing nightmares. From a little earlier, there was also The War Game, which was a 1965 production that was censored for nearly twenty years by the BBC.

As for your age - I'm too much of a gentleman to comment...

Some of the American civil defence literature of the 1950s is hilarious: "In event of nuclear attack, stay in doors and don't lose your head." Other helpful advice includes wearing a hat, or, if of the female persuasion, tights, to shield oneself for the blast. "Threads" is absolutely terrifying (and also perhaps the only film other than "The Full Monty" to be set in Sheffield) as is the American "The Day After." John Hersey's "Hiroshima" and Jonathan Schell's "The Fate of the Earth" are also profoundly grim, but terrifyingly compulsive, reads. I've been meaning to get round to Russell Hoban's post apocalyptic "Riddley Walker" too... Hey, do you remember those "Protect and Survive" ads or am I just showing my age?
