Somewhat on a tangent, but having - on Radio 2, granted - heard someone "near Slough" describing how she sees all Muslims with suspicion and wonders 'how much do you like it here?', I am inclined to believe that once again, the greatest terror is that of eager and disproprtionate reaction to any 'facts' presented.

Also, this same, erm, lady, said that now all "Muslims" should be seen as "guilty until proven innocent."

"Come friendly bombs..."

The plotters must have been close to completion for such a massive alert to be called, yet nothing has yet been found.

Which presumably fits in quite neatly with:

British police were planning to continue to run surveillance for at least another week to try to obtain more evidence, while American officials pressured them to arrest the suspects sooner. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case.

In contrast to previous reports, the official suggested an attack was not imminent, saying the suspects had not yet purchased any airline tickets. In fact, some did not even have passports.

Spot on Chris. There isn't much coming out to make clear whether this was as big a plot as we've been told. Of course operational security may mean we won't be told immediately and I, for one, accept that.

One of the real problems is that every time the authorities do a stormtrooper impression and then fail to deliver the goods - and they are making it a habit these days - the more likely it is that we will all get hacked off with it and at some point the worm will turn and we'll all want back our liberties and freedoms.

Like most people I can actually put up with a lot if I feel it makes me, or my family, safer. What I can't put up with is posturing that makes no difference. Shooting a man on the tube because he was vaguely foreign and the 'intel' wasn't quite right is no comfort to me that I am safer in my own country. Far from it. Shooting a chap in his own home because the gun went off by accident is even less likely to comfort me, even if the chap who was shot had been proved to be involved in some plot. The gun went off by accident. That's okay then. If a policman shoots you by accident it's just one of those things we'll all have to put up with.

A friend was woken up at 6 am one morning about 5-6 years ago as police stormed his house. They'd were looking for a drug dealer and got the wrong house! Imagine if they'd been armed to the teeth as any policeman might these days. Accidents do happen. As we've seen.

We've even abolished the death penalty in this country because too many mistakes were made by the 'authorities'. Perhaps Frank Kafka got it right in The Trial.
