As a devout Liberal, I am increasingly disturbed by this Govt’s rush to legislate away our hard won freedoms. No sooner had the latest plot been uncovered than “Dr” John Reid was demanding 90 days detention for the Police so they could question such suspects.Most have now been charged with offences well within the current 28 days let alone 90!!

I agree with posters who say that the terrorists have already won.This is one of the few things I agree with baroness Thatcher about.Terrorists are not something different they are criminals and as she said “crime is crime is crime”. The way forward is to treat them as such and deal with them through the courts with full legal rights. The cheif US prosecutor insisted on such a thing a Nuremburg for the captured leaders of the 3rd Reich and we should do so now. That way in an open and transparent manner people can see these people for what they are.It also means that their supporters cannot complain about injustice if justice is done and seen to be done.

Liberalism is not as the American right would have you believe a terrible diesease yes Anne Coulter I talking to you, but the cornerstone of democracy.The rule of law is the only law a civilised society needs its time we realised that stopped reverting to the law of governemnet diktat.

The terrorist are winning because we are giving them exactly what they want – a jettisoning of the very values and beliefs that have (supposedly) defined Western democracies for the better part of 60 years. Remember all this “They hate our freedoms?”-shite the American far right used to spout as to why the likes of Al Qaeda would dearly like to bomb us into kingdom come? Well, how many freedoms are there left for them to hate, I wonder, now that we’ve spent the last five years with nutjobs like Blair and Bush setting the agenda in this “war on terror” (the oxymoron to end all oxymorons, might I add).

But I suppose that’s slightly off-topic here. Still, I’d rather not comment on this recent “I’m not a racist, just worried about my own safety”-episode in detail, lest I risk alleviating my blood pressure so much I’ll either explode or implode, or both (which admittedly isn’t scientifically possible, or so they say, but I’d rather not take the chance). All I’ll add is: well said Mr. Qmghlm, and never a truer word spoken.

The terrorists have already won because we are now giving them the exact evidence they need to prove that Muslims are being persecuted for nothing. I understand that people are scared about plane security, but honestly if those two really were terrorists I wonder what would have happened to that plane before take-off once they realised the jig was up? Beggars belief.

God help anyone coming back from holiday whose tan makes them look like a terrorist (terrorist=dark skinned person).

Having said that, there is a truth that you’re probably more likely to be bombed to death at the moment by someone Asian than by a Welsh farmer – let’s be honest. And I say that as a half English half Asian dark-skinned bloke who’s been patted down at airports a couple of times post 9/11 on the basis of how I look. Whilst it’s inconvenient and not terribly nice to have people stare at you while security check whether you’re a lunatic, I personally would rather they do that than allow a real lunatic onto the plane.

They just need to find better and more effective ways to do it, I think, without alienating one person from another. That would be a terrible victory for terrorists.
