With Leeds, Leicester and Wolves all relegated at the weekend, Arsenal already champions, second and third place more or less settled, the only thing left to contest in the final two matches of the season is fourth place (and hence Champions League football). Paul Wilson was right - it really has been a terrible Premiership this season (and this is despite Arsenal winning it!). Not just the lack of an exciting finish, but the quality of football in most cases has been uninspiring.
I’d come up with a solution but I can’t think of one. The inflated money in the Premiership has furthered the gap between it and the Nationwide League, while the Champions League has stretched the top three in the Premiership from the rest of the pack. The rest of the Premiership has (with a few notable exceptions like Charlton) spent fortunes in trying to join the rest, only to find they have paid over the odds for mediocre players. Not only has this widened the gulf in class, but the quality of football below the top three is markedly reduced, with no chance of honours (and the UEFA Cup greatly devalued), there is nothing to play for save staying in the Premiership. The only solution, perhaps, is to slay the Champions League and Premiership cash cows, and level out the playing field a bit more, but how damn likely is that going to be?
Hundreds were expected to turn up to a “cannabis festival” in a Birmingham park today….but only one person actually turned up.
Been away all weekend so haven’t been able to read much stuff online, but I found these quick links to nibble on: Google’s IPO is valued at $e × 109; The Museum of Bad Art (via Sore Eyes); navigation icons from various corporate sites (via gromBlog).
Oh, and why are so many people sporting mullets these days? It’s not ironic, it’s just shit.
You know those scare stories that there was a terrorist plot to bomb Old Trafford? Well, it turns out the tickets police found in the ‘raid’ were actually souvenirs from a past match. Utter incompetence on the part of the investigators, or a deliberate attempt to stoke more fear in people’s hearts? I don’t know which one I’d rather want.
Absolutely appalling
So much for the notion our troops are noble, caring guardians of Iraq while the Americans are the gung-ho occupiers.
On behalf of the people of the United Kingdom, I would like to welcome the peoples of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia to the European Union. Our press may give the impression that Eastern & Southern Europeans are not welcome, but plenty of us here are willing to forge closer bonds and bring about unity with our friends abroad. Here’s to a new era!
