I don’t normally like Damien Hirst’s work, but his rejected cover for the new Band Aid single is actually quite good. Especially compared to the ridiculous cutesy-poo graphic that was chosen in favour of it - at least the Hirst one makes the point that there are people out there who are fucking dying right now as you buy it.

The Bambi one is massively disturbing, just because it is too cute for words. Wouldn’t the figure of death just be too obvious? The song’s sweet, but then there are those lines juxtaposing the white Christmas mulch with ‘thank god it’s them instead of you.’ Crap lineup this time round and what’s with the applause at the end. Are they pleased with themselves for their good deed????? Half a day’s work and guaranteed new record contract. And. and. Bloody Sudanese government won’t let my colleague into Dafur region without a seven day wait and I can’t mention how much cash! How the hell are aid trucks to get there?
Rant rant….. Where was I?

And, whatsmore the kids I work with could do a better job of hatcheting together a photo than whichever “artist” is gaining benefit from his/her Picture Viewer-created image being plastered over the cover of what is, lets face it, fucking dross. Maybe if we all have a whip round we can send the fuckers out there to do something useful, instead of standing in a studio feeling smug.

I think it’s awful. Looks like the sort of idea that a fifth-former Art student would come up with. Terrible.
That’s not to say that the real cover is any better, of course
