Solving the world’s problems, one Googlewhack at a time…

June 1st, 2005

There are many great problems with the world at the moment - and they need to be solved. Oxford University and Dave Gorman look set to battle it out to see who solves them first.

(As an aside, I have to say I quite like the idea of ’stampvelopes’)

stampvelopes have been around in the United States for more than a century. They come in two sizes and two denominations (regular first class and international air mail), and two types of post card (first class and international air mail). I have always wondered why they weren’t available here in the UK. There is a modest surcharge for the envelope itself but it is such a time saver.

Another postage problem solved would be to sell rolls of perforated 1st class and 2nd class stamps that could be placed into a stamping machine (like the one I used in the US) and just stamped onto the envelope. You fill a reservoir with water, and when you press down on the machine it leaks a bit of water on the envelope then cuts off a stamp and presses it down on the water spot. I know they have perforated rolls here but they are only in 500 and 1000 stamp units. In the US they start at 100 stamps, which is just right.
