Nice redesign :) not sure the banner works with my wide screen but the site as a whole seems to work… your right hand column is also impossibly long now… and I’ve never understood the purpose of a “recent posts” section… But I like the colours…

The recent posts section is for people who are not looking at the most recent blog posts page, but looking at either an old blog post or one of the many other pages on the site.
You’re right about the long right-hand column - I might make a drop-down for the categories to go with the monthly drop-down, but that doesn’t shorten it by that much. What I might also do is switch the Powered By and Best Viewed boxes to the left, to balance it out a little more.

Alternatively, move the ‘blogs I read’ over to underneath the ‘books I read’ section. That should help a lot.
