Back in London
September 16th, 2005Had a hectic week moving, saying an unhappy ‘goodbye’ to Edinburgh and a grudging ‘hello’ to London. Still sorting things out like my possessions, broadband connection, as well as fixing my parents’ computer (and discovering they bought, for some reason, a ridiculously short USB extension cable, pictured right). By the time the weekend’s over I should be back on track.
By the way, can anyone give me a job? :-)

What on earth is the point of that cable?

After a bit of puzzling, I have managed to work out its purpose.

As a person frequently involved in adhoc PC repair/upgrades from relatives and friends, those short USB extenders are like manna from above !
Popular PC manufacturers tend to have such crappy designed machines with USB ports surrounded by acres of bulging plastic, as soon as you get an integrated USB device (like a “pen drive”) with a slightly larger connector, it wont fit.
Front USB ports are laughingly advertised as “easily accessable”, not when they’ve been recessed 10mm into the plastic case they aren’t.
Hence, the mini-extension cable.
