Brutally honest
February 13th, 2006After a busy weekend I’m a little behind and have only just managed to catch up on the latest tales of abuse in Iraq but one thing has struck me - isn’t the News of the World’s “BRUTAL!” headline, with that jaunty exclamation mark, a tad… triumphant? Almost proud of the matter? It’s vaguely reminiscent of an infamous headline from the past.

Rejected headlines:
POW!
SMACKDOWN!
ZOUNDS!
WELL HARD!
PUNCHING!
SENSELESS!
ASSAULTALICIOUS!
BANGBANGBANG!

Sorry Tom, had to cut the last one on that list - it was shagging up the “Recent comments” thing in the right-hand column.

Yeah, I noticed it had gone funny, and I suspected it might have been me that broke it.

As memory serves, the “Gotcha!” headline was pulled after the early edition, once the number of fatalities became clear. Doesn’t stop them being proud of it now though, the fucks.

Nothing quite beats the post De Menezes shooting Sun headline of
“One down three to go!”
